Stari Grad is the oldest resort on the island of Hvar, which dates back to a Greek colonization in the 4th century BC, when it was known as Pharos. Archaeological remains of the Greek settlement remain just outside the center. Early in Venice's rule in the Middle Ages, the island's administrative centre was moved from Stari Grad to the city of Hvar. Stari Grad means the old town.
